What's involved?

We’re assuming you’re here because you want to stop smoking, and you could do with extra support.

What Works

Most people try several times before they finally stop. We aim to help you succeed this time, by sharing the insights and wisdom of those who have managed it.

For five years, we have studied what works. We've drawn a map of the landscape you pass through as you make the switch to smoke-free. We also suggest a range of tips, tricks and techniques you can use to get to your destination.

Themed Sessions

We've divided our support into weekly sessions. Each has a theme to match your stage of the switch.

To benefit, simply access your web pages once a week for 8 weeks. Each session usually takes around 40 minutes, though it's best to go at your own pace.

Nicotine

Nicotine is highly addictive, so going 'cold turkey' is usually an uncomfortable experience.

Like many other methods, we recommend nicotine replacement products like patches or gum to help with the cravings.

Sticking to this can avoid many uncomfortable moments!

Unique Approach

We use the analogy of a horse race to help you develop your race-plan for stopping smoking.

Your challenge can be compared to a
'powerful racehorse' with you as the rider:

"you don't have to defeat it,
you simply have to direct it."

Popular myths exposed

To clarify what really lies ahead, let's first eliminate three commonly-held myths about stopping smoking.

1. The "single-event" myth

Stopping smoking is not a single-event, it's a process. Putting out that final cigarette is a single event, agreed, but staying smoke-free demands more.

For a few weeks, the memory of smoking will be interconnected with many of your daily routines, and your body will still be dependent on nicotine.

We take you through the full 8-week process of becoming smoke-free.

2. The "willpower" myth

Most approaches claim that you need willpower. What you really need is consistency.

We have seen people demonstrate immense willpower most of the time, only to lapse when they were caught out by an unexpected surprise.

Our process is designed to give you consistency throughout your switch.

3. The "supervision" myth

Most methods try to use authority to 'supervise your behaviour', such as lecturing on the risks of smoking.

This is crazy - you know how to lead your life better than anyone around you.

Se-la-vie is supportive without being intrusive. We pass techniques to you and respect your autonomy.

Analogy

To make the challenge simpler and clearer, we use the analogy of a cross-country horse race.

The similarities with your switch are:
  • a distance to cover to get to the finish line
  • you will encounter a series of obstacles
  • a good rider-racehorse combination helps

This extended comparison helps explain each stage and draws your focus to what matters most.

Resolve

Disconnecting from cigarettes is more complicated than most people realise. The past influences our future for longer and in more ways than we expect!

Attempts break down because we are vulnerable. Good intentions dissolve, we capitulate.

Your real challenge is not the struggle you have with a pack of cigarettes, it is the internal contest that you have with yourself!

Our techniques are designed to build and sustain your resolve until you are completely free from cigarettes.

Planning

Based on accumulated insight, we are able to give you some advance warning of what to expect each week.

To make your switch more clear-cut, we:
  • break the switch down into manageable stages
  • help you focus on what's relevant at each stage
  • make sense of an unfamiliar phase

We provide the knowledge, skills and inspiration to empower your race-plan.

You develop a plan that fits in with your everyday life and works for you.

Collaboration

We're on your side, and here to support you.

Our mission is to provide insight that is relevant to your switch, with the aim of:
  • leading you through the process
  • helping you make a race-plan that works
  • transfering skills and encouraging autonomy

In collaborating this way, we are motivated by the genuine empathy and care of a good friend.
